Thirsty Thursday

We would like to introduce a segment to our blog, Thirsty Thursday!  Each week we will be bringing you different things such as wine reviews and drink recipes.
This week's drink of choice, SOUTHSIDE.  A Baltimore staple made with mint, citrus and rum, these drinks can be found at country clubs around the area in addition to mix that is now sold in area stores such as Wells.  It appears in the spring at tailgates in the Maryland hunt country and is still appearing the in late summer at Labor Day gatherings.
It is thought that the Southside originated on the South Side of Chicago during Prohibition. To mask the flavor of the gin that was being produced on the South Side of the city, the makers took to adding citrus juices and sugar to cover up the taste.  The biggest difference between the Southsides that began in Chicago and the “Baltimore” Southside is that they traditionally used gin.  Baltimore Southsides are usually made with a combination of light and dark rum.
Of the well known recipes, Andy Ervin's, the 85-year-old bartender at the Elkridge Club, and George Lee's, the 87-year-old former bartender at the Green Spring Valley Hunt Club are the local standouts. Mr. Ervin began making the drink over 45 years ago when he began working at the Elkridge Club.  When makng his version of the mix, he utilizes the entire sprig of mint, stems and leaves included. Lee on the other hand uses just the mint leaves and not stems. He began bottling his mix and selling it after retiring from Green Spring in 1985.  Although they will not supply you with their exact recipes, Mr. Ervin will give you a take on his while Mr. Lee sells his mix out of his house.

Another local take on the mix is one that was created by Barbie Hargrave and her husband.  Lindsay's Southside mix, while not as good as Mr. Lee's is a very close second.  She and her husband began making the mix over 10 years ago when they saw a nitch to be filled in the market.  Their mix is more readily available in local stores, appealing to the masses.
If you would like to take a stab at making your own and don't have access to the mix here in Baltimore, this is the recipe for Andy Ervin's Southside.  An important note whether you are using mix or making it from scratch: When making the drink, the proportions of mix, to rum and club soda are imperative.

Andy Ervin's Southside
Makes enough for four 12-ounce cocktails

1 "heavin' handful" of mint cuttings (about 2 cups)
3 ounces fresh-squeezed lemon juice
4 ounces fresh-squeezed lime juice
8 tablespoons granulated sugar
8 Ice Cubes
Rum to Taste
  1. Place every ingredient, except the rum, in a blender or food processor and run on high until mint is chopped, about 30 to 60 seconds.
  2. Strain, pouring mixture into a pitcher.
  3. For each drink, fill a 12-ounce glass with ice. Add 4 ounces of mint mixture and 3 ounces of rum. Stir well. Top with a shot of dark rum.

Drink and enjoy!  Let us know what your thoughts are on the Southside and any drinks you would like us to cover in the future.

Truckeroo

One of my favorite Friday summer night activities in DC is Truckeroo.  It is an event where approximately 25 food trucks come out to The Bullpen. The Bullpen is a new area outside of Nationals Stadium that has a stage for concerts, multiple bars, and cornhole. There are different events held there almost every weekend in addition to being open before every home game. Go Nats!

My first stop is always the bar but after that I immediately head to The Big Cheese.

The truck that always has the longest lines has got to be the Maine Lobster Roll truck.  A good strategy when attending Truckeroo is to get food at one truck then eat that while waiting in line at the next. I suggest always taking a friend so that you can try as many things as possible.

When you need a break from eating, there are two places to head. The first being the cornhole area. While I still have never played when we have been (it's usually packed), I always go over an watch.

My other favorite part of Truckeroo, other than the food, are the bands. From rock to country, top 20 to bluegrass, they have it all. Bands vary throughout the night to appeal to all sorts of audiences.

This man was loving the music and even felt the need to dance with his dog.

Next time you are in DC I definitely suggest you try out an event at The Bullpen. I live right around the corner and would love to meet you there.

Seaside Chic

Summer has me dreaming of the ocean, the waves, and the beach.  Unfortunately classes have me land locked.  So I thought I'd take a study break and find some of my favorite items that inspire me to work even harder so I can eventually afford that dream seaside retreat.

Let's start with the basics...

You always need a well stocked bar
Chesapeake Bar

And ice to keep those drinks cold
Barclay and Butera Ice Bucket

Finally, candles to set the mood and keep the bugs away!

Sailboat Votive Candle Holders

For dinner...

Start with a seaside inspired meal prepared from Coastal Cooking, written by Maryland native John Shields

And don't forget to give everyone a place

And Tervis Tumblers are great to avoid leaving rings on the table

And for lounging,

I think I'm having a summer affair with Pottery Barn and their furniture, Chesapeake Chaise

And don't forget a towel to dry off with,

I can't believe summer is almost over, I am scrambling to fit in as much time in the sun as I possibly can!  What are some of your favorite things about summer?

Purple Friday

If you're from Baltimore then you know that today is a very special day, our first Purple Friday!

Now I love summer, and am still trying to squeeze every last drop out of it, but there is nothing better than football season in Baltimore!

I am extra excited for this year because it will be my first year in Federal Hill for all of football season!  Hopefully I'll see you all out for the games and supporting our Ravens!

Prigel Family Creamery

Hands down, one of the greatest things in life has got to be ice cream.  It can cure everything from a bad day to a sore mouth when you get dental work done.

On my visit home this weekend, Marketing Mommy wanted to introduce me to her new favorite spot in town.  It takes a lot for her to crave ice cream so you know that when she is, it's got to be AMAZING.

Let me say, the ice cream did not disappoint.  We started to take this beautiful drive out through the country roads and ended up at a big barn in the middle of a field.

Enter the Prigel Family Creamery.

In the field directly next to the barn live all of the cows that produce that milk for the ice cream.  Completely grass fed, you know you are getting the highest quality ice cream possible.  They were certified organic in 2008 and don't feed their cows any antibiotics or synthetic hormones.

There are a multitude of flavors to choose from and they will let you try as many as you'd like.  They will even create homemade ice cream sandwiches for you from any of the ice creams on fresh chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin cookies.  I went with the Butter Pecan and it was hands down the best ice cream I have ever had.

In addition to their ice cream, the creamery also sells fresh milk and eggs (sorry for the terrible picture quality).

We saw many people taking advantage of the blankets and sitting down in the grass with their families to enjoy the ice cream.  As we were getting ready to leave, the cows began to line up for their nightly trek to the field across the street.  Believe it or not, they know that as soon as they see the farmer coming across the road, it is time to line up.  It was one of the craziest things I have ever seen.

In addition to people coming to enjoy the ice cream and the nightly cow parade, the creamery does Friday night concert events where people can bring a picnic and listen to a concert put on by a local band.

If you ever have a free afternoon or evening, you have got to go try their ice cream.

It is worth the drive!

Monday Pick Me Up

I feel every once in awhile you need a little Monday morning pick me up, something that'll make you smile and remember the days when you didn't have to be in an office at 8 or 9, and maybe it even makes you forget you're in the office currently.

Today was definitely one of those days for me, so here's what I used as my little 3 minute vacation when I first got to work...

Happy Monday!!

Rainy Monday

On a rainy Monday morning like this one, no one wants to get out of bed.  Wouldn't it be so much nicer to curl up in bed with a cup of tea and a good book?  And if we're really wishing for something maybe there would be a guy a la Neal Caffrey of White Collar in that bed with us....

Since the guy might be a bit harder to come by I, eBr, thought I'd share some of the books I'm currently wishing I could curl up with.

Because I feel I need to read the book again before I see the movie

I feel I missed out in high school never reading this and basically want to know what it is about!

I've been dreaming of Ireland recently, and this book paired with the rain might make me think I'm really there.

Not ashamed to admit this book, and really the whole series is my guilty pleasure book of choice.

On a day like today I completely condone taking a mental health day, staying in bed, and just reading the day away.

What books would you curl up with on a rainy day?

Joules

Around this time last year I, eBr, had just finished spending a month in England with my mother.  While over there, we were introduced to Joules.  I have a fear I'll one day find out they are the British version of Hollister or Abercrombie and Fitch but for now, I'm hooked
Longing for last summer's trip I made my way to the Joules website this morning....big mistake....
Here are some of my favorites:

Brolly Umbrella

Furley Silk Scarf

Georgina Dress

Nigella Top

Kingston Shirt

Moredale Quilted Jacket

My favorite part about the Joules clothes are the pops of color and whimsical details  included in almost every piece.  I have a feeling today might be an expensive day!

Fourth Fashion

Surrounding the fourth of July I, eBr, saw some pretty interesting as well as some pretty awesome American fashion.  Not having many America/Flag inspired outfits I was inspired by these people and thought I'd share some of my favorites...

More of an accessory than an outfit but anytime there is a matching koozie to a shirt I am excited!

Saw so many guys wearing this!  Very funny and cute

This Urban Outfitter's BDG American Flag Chambray Button Down is perfect for the girls.  While I'm not a huge fan of denim, I would be all for this on the 4th!

As I stated above, other than jeans, denim and I aren't huge fans of each other.  So I picked these American Flag Sweater Shorts

For the boys, I love American Flag shorts.  I don't know what it is I think they are just too cute!

And if it's a chillier 4th these pants are the best!

Hope you all had a great Fourth of July!  Time to start planning the outfits for next year!
